The thought of an elephant rental business is both novel and intriguing to those in the West who rarely see an elephant – but in Kerala, India, it is a flourishing part of cultural and business life.

The elephants are hired to transport heavy materials during the renovation of dilapidated temples, and for the pomp and prestige they bring to business inaugurations and religious festivals.
