Day 6: Homeopathy in 30 Days Lesson

Welcome back to Day 6 of the Homeopathy in 30 Days course.

Designed for flexibility, this 30-day course offers three learning levels:

  1. Five-Minute Overviews for busy schedules
  2. Twenty-Minute Explorations for enhanced understanding
  3. Two-Hour Deep-Dives for comprehensive learning

In them, you’ll discover how homeopathy offers a gentle, safe approach to treating first-aid needs, acute conditions, chronic issues, and even preventing epidemic diseases. You’ll also develop practical skills to apply homeopathy in these various situations.

With that said, let’s make a start on today’s lesson.

Five-Minute Overview

(This Five-Minute Overview is a concise summary of today’s key points, including the ‘Know Your Remedy’ synopsis. Perfect for a quick read or weekly review. Complete this stage before moving on to the Twenty-Minute Exploration.)

By the end of the Twenty-Minute Exploration you should:

  • Know Your Remedy: Discover the uses of Sulphur (Sulph.) by reviewing its keynote synopsis, and exploring some of its acute and chronic uses. As you read, think about possible first-aid or quick-relief applications.
  • Recognise a remedy from those studied so far that appears to suit Jack.
  • Have an understanding of the true seat of disease and what symptoms really show.
  • Be able to identify one keynote symptom that Jack and Jill have in common.

By the end of the Two-Hour Deep-Dive you should:

  • Have a much deeper understanding of Sulphur (Sulph.) after watching two videos and reading two materia medicas, each of which present a larger symptom profile than the earlier remedy synopsis.
  • Be able to list the three sources of symptoms found within homeopathic materia medicas.
  • Know how serious symptoms and conditions came to be listed in materia medicas.
  • Know the point at which provings are stopped, and why.
  • Have an awareness of some of the poisons included in materia medicas.
  • Tell why it is safe for homeopaths and others to use these poisons.
  • Have an awareness of the interplay between similarity, sensitivity, disease states, susceptibility, and provings.
  • Know which aphorisms specifically discuss sensitivity and susceptibility.

Twenty-Minute Exploration

(This Twenty-Minute Exploration is the ‘learn and understand’ section of the course. It builds on the Five-Minute Overview. Complete this stage before moving on to the Two-Hour Deep-Dive.)

Know Your Remedies: Sulphur (Sulph.)

(These synopses contain the keynotes of each remedy- the most frequently occurring, distinctive, or unusual symptoms which often allow the prescriber to recall them from memory alone.)

Sulphur (Sulph.) is the sixth remedy synopsis for this course.

Take time to read the Sulphur (Sulph.)) synopsis and the symptoms it treats in the Know Your Remedies section of the Homeopathy Plus website. (As a Twenty-Minute Explorer, it is sufficient to read up to the ‘Where Do I Find It?’ heading as the material beyond this will be covered in either the ‘Deep-Dive section or in coming lessons.)

When symptoms suit, Sulphur is an important remedy for eczema, digestive disturbances, and burning pains … but that’s not all Sulphur treats. Can you see other acute and chronic symptoms within its synopsis?

Jack and Jill (2) – Healthy or Sick?

On reading the Sulphur synopsis, you may have thought that many of Sulphur’s characteristics apply to Jack (of Jack and Jill fame.) If you did, give yourself a pat on the back as that is correct. From hereon in, we will use Sulphur and Arsenicum (from Day 5) as remedy descriptors for the two friends.

Sulphur Jack and Arsenicum Jill, from the homeopathic perspective, are not in complete health.

Arsenicum Jill would agree with this as she is often at the medical centre. Her hay fever makes her eyes burn and swell, and without her preventative inhaler she has episodes of asthma. Her doctor wants her to see a counsellor about her anxiety, and for the itchy, burning eczema and worries that keep her awake at night.

Sulphur Jack, though, would say he is never sick … but is he right? On the surface he appears robust and healthy but his lack of interest in any sort of routine, his general untidiness, and his strong preference for beer, sweets, and spicy ‘fast foods’ that burn his stomach, among other things, are signs of an early imbalance.

A quick review of the Sulphur (Sulph.) synopsis shows some of the potential problems in store for Sulphur Jack if his slightly disordered vital force is weakened further by his eating habits, lifestyle, or suppressive conventional medicines.

Different Perspectives

Orthodox medicine mostly sees diseases and disorders as separate problems that require separate types of treatments. (That is certainly the case for Arsenicum Jill. She is on drops for her eyes, an antihistamine for her hay fever, a puffer for her asthma, cream for her eczema, sleeping pills for her insomnia, and is about to be given a referral for her anxiety.)

Homeopathy, from its vitalist perspective, understands co-existing health problems to be one energetic disease (mistunement) of the vital force that can be treated by the one energetic remedy. When the vital force is retuned (returned to normal functioning), symptoms resolve and disappear.

A Question for You

One of the strategies for learning remedies from the Day 2 Lesson was by comparison. Here’s a chance to do that with Sulphur (Sulph.) and Arsenicum album (Ars.). Even though they are both very different remedies, there is one keynote symptom they both have in common. Can you see it? Tell us what it is in Day 6: Sulphur Jack and Arsenicum Jill Share This Keynote Symptom thread.

Learning Activities

Remember: tomorrow, there will be a Test Your Knowledge quiz on the 20 remedies listed in Homeopathy Made Simple – First Steps to First Aid in the Day 7: Revision Lesson. Try to commit these remedies to memory in preparation for the quiz, and so you can turn to them quickly in an emergency.

Two-Hour Deep Dive

(This Two-Hour Deep-Dive is the ‘learn, understand, and apply’ section of the course. Proceed if comfortable with earlier material to engage with in-depth activities.)

Diving Deeper With Sulphur (Sulph.)

In the Twenty-Minute Exploration section a synopsis of Sulphur (Sulph.) was presented. Now, it is time to go further and deeper.

  • Return to Sulphur (Sulph.) in the Know Your Remedies section of the Homeopathy Plus website and read the From Past Masters section. This section contains an anecdotal account by medical homeopath, E. B. Nash (M.D.) of his experiences with Sulphur at the turn of last century. Nash includes treatment stories from his practice, and comparison remedies that should also be considered with Sulphur.
  • Another useful text, the Materia Medica by William Boericke, M.D., contains a condensed list of symptoms for Sulphur (Sulph.). The focus of this materia medica, unlike some modern materia medicas, is on a remedy’s physical symptoms and pathology more than its mental-emotional symptoms.
  • The videos, Sulphur – Keynote Symptoms (1) and Sulphur – Keynote Symptoms (2) also provide helpful information on this remedy. (This video mentions subject matter such as miasms that will be covered in later lessons.)
  • A final and longer video, What is the homeopathic personality of geniuses like Albert Einstein and Dr. Hahnemann?, looks at Sulphur traits through the lens of a mini-series on the life and achievements of Albert Einstein.

Building the Materia Medica

In the last lesson we discussed how traditional provings and their equivalent homeopathic pathogenetic trials (HPTs) produce symptoms that are recorded in materia medicas for treatment purposes.

But provings and HPTs are not the only source of information. Poisonings and clinical observations also play a part.

Poisonings

Symptoms produced by a poison are nothing more than a proving of a toxic substance.

While most provings use remedies in energetic potencies so that provers are not harmed, some substances find their way into the homeopathic materia medica before a proving has been conducted as a result of symptoms recorded in toxicology reports. Arsenicum album, prepared from the poison arsenic, is one example.

Clinical Observations

In the Day 3 Lesson, a number of unpleasant or serious conditions were listed for China officinalis including: anaemia, arthritis, asthma, cholecystitis, hepatitis, inflammatory bowel disease, peptic ulcers, and splenomegaly.

While these health problems are not unusual for people in a chronic ‘China state’, none of them were produced during China’s short proving.

That’s because all provings are stopped when first symptoms appear to avoid prolonged or overly unpleasant symptoms for the provers.

This being the case, how then did these serious conditions come to be listed for China officinalis?

The answer is that they were entered into the materia medica after it was repeatedly noticed in practice that people being treated for mild China symptoms often had one or more of these more serious conditions, and that they also improved with the remedy.

Unless symptoms were entered as a result of toxicology reports, the same is true for all other homeopathic remedies in which serious pathology is recorded.

In Summary

Materia medicas (and as a result, repertories) are comprised of:

  1. Symptoms induced by provings,
  2. Symptoms from poisonings, and
  3. Symptoms cured in clinic.

Remedies from Poisons

Though safe in potency, numerous remedies in homeopathy are prepared from dangerous or toxic substances.

As already discussed, symptom information about these substances enters the homeopathic materia medica from either toxicology reports or by provings once the poison has been rendered safe by potentisation.

Some ‘poisons’ within the homeopathic materia medica are: Belladonna, the deadly nightshade; Lachesis muta, the venom of the bushmaster snake; Agaricus muscarius, a hallucinogenic mushroom; and Glonoinum prepared from nitroglycerine. (Arsenicum album, from arsenic, Jill’s remedy, can also be added to this list.)

The keynote symptoms for each of these remedies can be seen in their synopses in the Know Your Remedies of the Homeopathy Plus website.

Toxicology reports certainly provide useful symptoms about a poison but it is only when it is potentised and proved in potency that its full spectrum of symptoms are produced, and its full therapeutic ability is revealed.

Similarity, Sensitivity, Diseases, Susceptibility, and Provings

In the Organon, Hahnemann explains how different diseases do not affect all equally. Two people may have the same exposure to a rhinovirus, for example, but only one may catch a cold. This is because they each have different areas of weakness.

Hahnemann also said that medicines always produce symptoms of disease when given in large enough doses. This is true for both types of medicine- chemical and energetic.

The tendency to experience symptoms produced by a medicine (or disease) is known as ‘susceptibility’.

When the symptoms of a medicine-induced disease (chemical or energetic) are similar to those of the diseased vital force, the vital force develops a heightened sensitivity to that substance and is more susceptible to its effects. In this state, true cure rather than just palliation or suppression is possible.

But, when there is no similarity between the symptoms of the disease (mistunement of the vital force) and those of a remedy, there is no sensitivity, no susceptibility, and no response to the remedy.

The effects of sensitivity and susceptibility are also seen in provings which are just an artificial, temporary and energetically-induced disease state caused by the remedy.

Not all provers will respond equally to all remedies, or produce the same set of symptoms. Each prover responds according to their unique sensitivity and susceptibility, and the degree of symptom-similarity they have to that particular remedy.

That is why Hahnemann said that rather than weakening the prover, correctly run provings have the opposite effect of improving health by strengthening or repairing pre-existing weaknesses and susceptibilities.

(You may like to review information on sensitivity (Day 2), Law of Similars (Day 3), provings (Day 4), and the vital force (Day 5).

Aphorisms for Sensitivity and Susceptibility

Hahnemann discussed the concepts just presented in many parts of the Organon but key aphorisms are aphorisms 27- 34
